Metro DC Dance Awards Mission / Vision

The Metro DC Dance Awards (MDCDA) celebrates and promotes excellence and diversity within the dance community in metropolitan Washington, D.C through its annual awards ceremony and inclusive nominating process.

Guiding Principles

I. Recognition: MDCDA is a galvanizing opportunity in Metropolitan DC for dance artists and audiences to recognize outstanding achievements by professionals, amateurs, and youth in categories covering performance, choreography, production values, and contribution to the the dance community.

II. Diversity: MDCDA strives to be inclusive and showcase the diversity of DC's dancemakers with events throughout the year featuring a range of dance disciplines from ballroom to hip hop to modern dance improvisation.

III. Strength: MDCDA encourages the growth and stability of both artists and audiences via support for professional dance companies and the dance community.

Goals (Roman numerals in parenthesis indicate which Principle(s) each goal serves)

A. Inspire and support established and aspiring talent in the community by publicly acknowledging and rewarding excellence in the dance community. (I)

B. Generate interest and excitement about MDCDA by engaging the public in an open nomination process of proposing candidates for excellent achievement in dance performance, choreography, and dance production. (I, III)

C. Energize members of the dance community by drawing on their professional experience through a peer-voting process to select award finalists from the publicly nominated candidates. (I)

D. Assemble a selection committee of knowledgeable dance community professionals and enthusiasts to actively view local dance events throughout the season and ultimately select the award winners. (I)

E. Promote the diversity of dance excellence by including a wide-range of dance disciplines in MDCDA public events. (II)

F. Maintain MDCDA as the premiere annual recognition ceremony for the metropolitan DC dance community by creating a solid planning organization to ensure its sustained continuity and growth from year to year. (III)

G. Aspire to bring together the dance community and the other cultural, corporate, and civic sectors of the larger metropolitan DC community by providing an ongoing, visible celebration of the dance community. (III)
