Eureka Dance Festival
August 29
Takoma Park, MD

The artists of the Eureka Dance Festival (www.dancefestival-eureka.org) believe in connecting dancers and audience members through choreography and conversation. In the first of six open studio showings before the full concert at Dance Place (December 11-12, 2010), the public is invited view and discuss “dances-in-progress.” At each event, leaders in the dance community facilitate these informal showings and discussions, creating an invigorating atmosphere of dance, conversation, and creativity targeted towards novice and experienced dance viewers alike. Features work by Orit Sherman, Nathan Andary, and Roxie Doniphan Thomas , this opening event of the Eureka Dance Festival will take place on Sunday August 29th from 3:00-6:00pm at the Dance Exchange (www.danceexchange.org).
Cultivating Choreographers and Dance Audiences
After a sold out inaugural 2009 show, the Eureka Dance Festival founders and DC-based dancer/choreographers Kate Jordan and Orit Sherman sat down with a team of artistic advisors from across the DC arts community. The two experienced dance educators asked: 1) How can we go beyond a single concert and instead support emerging artists through the creative process? And 2) How can we make opportunities for the curious DC public to see and understand dance? The result of these discussions is an exciting season of six public viewing and discussion sessions; five community master classes; and a concert at DancePlace on December 11 & 12, 2010.
The Story of Eureka
The Eureka Dance Festival nurtures new works by up and coming DC-area choreographers and cultivates audiences for dance. The festival provides a platform for artists to present new and innovative work on stage. The artists receive guidance and mentoring throughout the process by the artistic panel of the festival. In addition, the festival promotes close interaction among the artists, their peers and public audience, enabling collaborative work across various artistic media. A group of DC-metro area choreographers are chosen annually to create new works for the festival; taking their ideas from conception to full stage production. Enabling the presentation of this new work, the emerging artists receive production assistance in the form of lighting design, photographs, and video documentation of the performance weekend. During the Eureka Dance Festival process, artists create connections with other artists and with the greater community, sparking future opportunities.

Tommy Parlon Dance Projects
Tommy Parlon Dance Projects is a collection of dancers and friends whose unique styles and strong personalities meld to support the athletic, yet released choreography of Mr. Parlon. While exploring the limits of movement potential and physical possibility, the work of Tommy Parlon lays bare the intrinsic nature of human interaction. According to The Washington Post, his choreography has an "easy release, but with steely underpinnings." This is contrasted with a sense of being "downright playful, athletic and infinitely graceful" (The Times Dispatch). Contact (202) 352-0213.
