Balston
Ballet - The Adagio curriculum is designed exclusively to provide young dancers with a joyful and educational transition from the world of magical fairy-tale dances to the fine art of classical ballet.
The program for our youngest students (ages 2 ½ - 4) is full of imagination, fairy tales, acting and beautiful costumes. At these levels students learn to follow directions, develop space orientation and memorize short dance combinations.
Later on (ages 5-6), the program becomes a structured curriculum of ballet poses and movements. The students develop basic dance coordination and body alignment through exercises at the barre and in the center.
At the next levels (age7+) the storybook dances are replaced by adapted classical ballet variations. The structured ballet syllabus requires special placement in classes according to previous ballet experience and skill.
Our beginning-intermediate ballet levels (age 10+) are concentrated on student’s preparation for pointe dancing. The students are encouraged to attend classes at least twice a week in order to develop the strength and stamina needed for safe pointe work.
The intermediate-advanced levels (age 14+) create balanced dancers with equal technical and stage confidence who could clearly “understand and begin to speak the language of the art of ballet”.
Jazz - The beginning jazz program (age 6-9) is fun, fun, fun! The students will be introduced to the foundations of the classical jazz technique. They will master a sense of consistent rhythm, in addition to learning body isolations and basic jazz steps and patterns. The program directs the dancers’ natural enthusiasm and personality towards “feeling the music” and dance expressiveness.
The beginning-intermediate jazz classes (age 10+) focus on movement articulation and fast changes of dance directions, levels and musical tempo. Memorizing combinations and developing extensions, balance, turns and leaps are emphasized at these levels.
Advanced dancers (age 14+) are experienced and confident performers. They feel comfortable learning combinations quickly. Advanced dancers work on furthering their technique and attempting challenging leaps, turns and rhythmic changes which will prepare them for advanced study.

The Culkin School has performed at the White House, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the National Theatre with the Trinity Irish Dance Company, the Irish Embassy Residence, Strathmore and at Wolf Trap National Park. DanceInTime teaches and performs Salsa/Latin dancing, with a specialty in Rueda de Casino which is a group form of Salsa Dancing. I like to say it is all the fun and joy of Salsa blended with the spirit of a team sport. You trade partners continuously, and everyone does steps that are "called" by a caller. The moves you learn can also be used in one on one Salsa dancing, and this is a wonderful way to learn Salsa moves. Check out this link: http://danceintime.com/instructionalvideos.htm for free video instruction on many interesting Salsa moves at all levels. There are also written descriptions of Salsa moves and many many performance videos on the website.
The classes are $10 per person and they are drop in; no class series that you have to sign up for. Your first studio class is free if you print out the discount coupon on the "Classes" page of the website. No partner is needed. Class is very friendly and informal; any dress is fine. Because this is a group/team version of Salsa, everyone works together and helps others as they learn.
The instructor starts with the basics and moves everyone along, learning as much as they are able to in each class. Beginning to advanced levels are covered so everyone is challenged. Feel free to come and watch at no charge. Ladies are welcome to learn to lead if they have mastered the following. Children are welcome to watch and teens over 14 may join the class.
Though the above classes are ongoing, check the "Classes" page of the website for other classes or for any schedule changes. Occasionally class is replaced by a party or is canceled for a performance, etc.
Barbara Bernstein, Director of DanceInTime, teaches, often along with other dedicated Salsa instructors, so that all levels can be addressed. For info on her background, see the website. If you have questions, feel free to contact her any time.
